Text 23 Jul 1 note Weeks 6 & 7

There’s only one week of MSYC left.  I’ve been trying not to think about it too much or I’m afraid I’ll start crying.

Week 6 I had a mixture of girls ages 9-14 in my cabin.  They were all from the same youth group, but other than that there was hardly a similarity between them.  Some were neat freaks (a couple girls went around and straightened up the other girls’ beds and smoothed out their wrinkled sheets) and some dumped their entire suitcase out and shoved everything under their bed during morning clean-up.  Some were incredibly insightful during devos while others played with cootie catchers.

It was also tough having a cabin with such a broad age range - hard to tailor cabin devos or decide appropriate discipline or decide when to turn out the lights and make everyone go to sleep.  I also thought the older girls might dislike having to hang out with the younger ones, but all in all it worked out pretty well.

Perhaps the funniest moment of the week came when one of my girls led the “watcha gonna do in a little canoe” song during cabin devo.  I guess in the future when I ask for volunteers to lead songs I’ll have to clarify that the songs should be religious.  Lest you think that this girl was completely clueless, however, I’d like to mention that she also asked who/what the Holy Spirit is and what he does, why the girls couldn’t lead songs during lights-out singing, and whether or not Jesus was Jewish.  Trinity, gender roles, and Jewish-Christian relations… pretty deep for a 9-year-old.

And I can’t fail to mention that my co-counselor Lanie was spectacular.  She took care of the kids as much as I did and we really hit it off.  I’m super excited that she’s going to be at FHU in the fall and I can already tell that we’re going to be good friends.

Week 7 was small and I didn’t have any campers.  It was a little more carefree and I got to hang out with my fellow counselors a whole lot, but I’m looking forward to having a full camp and my own cabin next week.
