Since I’ve moved to Tennessee I’ve hated on the SEC, especially in football. I felt it was my Texan/Big 12 duty to stand up against the obnoxious Alabama, Auburn, and UT (Tennessee, to clarify for all my Longhorns fans) supporters around me. They’ve even turned me obnoxious - I’ve developed the habit of yelling Roll Tide! or War Eagle! or singing “Rocky Top” at the top of my lungs, but always at the wrong time (War Eagle during a Bama game, “Rocky Top” when UT fumbles, etc.). And I take every chance I can to inform UT fans of how ugly their safety-cone orange color is.
And now it looks like Texas A&M is set to join the hated conference.
My thoughts?
- I’ll be devastated if the Aggie-Longhorn match-up becomes anything other than yearly. That’s a rivalry that’s just too good to let die!
- I’ll hate to see good Texan high school athletes get picked up by out-of-state schools.
- The Aggies have been on a role and better than Texas of late (the only thing that matters!) A switch to a new conference full of power-houses might reverse that.
- On the other hand, A&M’s recruiting might actually be benefitted if they can offer kids the opportunity to play in the highly-touted SEC.
- SEC = More money.
- If worse comes to worse, Aggies can start despising Ole Miss instead of Texas. From what I can tell, both schools have a similar stereotype - a place for snotty, rich, white, partiers - something the good ol’ country boys of A&M love to hate.
On a totally selfish note, why couldn’t this have happened sooner? I wouldn’t have had to spend the last 3 years being the only voice cheering for Big 12 football (and maybe I would have actually gotten some Aggie TV coverage…)
